Future Fashion Folio and Show

The Future Fashion Folio is a fashion design competition that takes place in two stages. In the first stage, submitted designs will be judged and the selected designs will be distributed to all Costume-Con 38 members months before the convention. The second stage will take place at the convention and will focus on those designs presented on stage by members of Costume-Con 38. Participants may choose to to take part in one or both stages.

First Stage: the Future Fashion Folio

Stage one focuses on design concepts, it is aimed at all those who enjoy coming up with great costume ideas. Anyone, even those not attending the convention, can submit original fashion designs. Submitted designs are judged by a panel and the selected designs are put together into the Folio, which is distributed to all attending members of the convention. This usually takes place in the month of October directly before the convention.

Once the Folio is published, attendees of the convention may choose one of the designs, make it and wear it (more on this below).

Awards will be given for the design stage as well as for the finished garments.

It’s a great way to get involved with Costume-Con and can be really fun! If you have lots of ideas, sketch them out and see how others interpret them! It’s also exciting to bring designs you never would have thought of to life.

The Future Fashion Design Competition

(Deadline for entering is September 1st, 2019.)

The Design Competition is open to everyone. You do not have to have a membership to the convention or be affiliated with any organized costuming group or other organization to enter the design portion of the contest. Designers do not have to construct the designs they submit to the Folio. You can let your imagination run free to specify cut, technique, materials, accessories and scenarios to develop your designs.

There are no specified categories for designs in the CC38 Design Competition. We would like to see a great variety of designs in the Folio and prefer to leave options open for anything. Some possible themes for designs are: anthropomorphic, anime, alien, athlete, entertainer, explorer, fantasy, leisure, royalty, time traveller, work, wedding, and so on. Let your imagination run wild!

1. All designs must be original concepts.

You can draw your designs on your own, draw on a traced figure, or have someone else draw the design for you, but the design idea must be original. Please give credit to anyone who helps you. Designs will be judged on the merit of the creative ideas, not the drawing.

Feeling intimidated by the blank page and concerns about your drawing skills? Not to worry! Fashion croquis (figures to draw on) are available for your use. You can Google “croquis” for examples.

2. All Designs may be submitted three ways:

i. Hard copy (aka: the old-fashioned way, on paper) designs must be submitted on one white 8.5″ x 11″ (or A4) sheet of paper, photocopied (not scanned & printed from your home computer,) black and white line art*. ii. On CD; scan your designs and put the files on a disk. Submit black and white line art*. See point 5 for detailed information on submission process. Please snail-mail your CD to:

iii. By email; scan your designs and send them as attachments to an email. See point 5 for detailed information on submission process. Submit these to: [Removed]

*Line art – black ink on white background; not pencil, no shading, no colours. A ½” margin around the image, so the design can easily be reproduced, must be included.

3. Do not send us original artwork.

When mailing physical items, all designs should be photocopies or duplicates of your digital files.

4. You may, and we encourage you to, submit designs in colour.

But we require a black and white line art copy of your design for reproduction in the Fashion Folio. Please make sure your drawings are neat and will reproduce well. This includes electronic format drawings. If you do send us hard copy colour versions please do not use anything that requires spray fixative or that may smear, smudge, stick or flake off on other people’s drawings.

5. Submission process

i. If you submit your design(s) on paper by snail mail:

Please include the following for each individual design:

• Each design on their own individual sheet of paper.

• On the back of each and every design sheet, make sure to write all this information in the upper right hand corner:

-the design’s name . Each design should be named by the name of your choice preceded by consecutive numbers. Here are a few examples: “#1 Playboy spaceship captain”, “#2 Angry subterranean elf”, “#3 Green tunic hero”. If the sheet show the color version, please add the word “ color” at the end of your title. Here is an example: “#3 Green tunic hero color”

-your address

-your email

-your phone number

-what was the inspiration for your design

-other classification if relevant

• A second, separate sheet with the description of the design. Designs usually have descriptions which should include any appropriate information to help a maker construct the design. Please label the description sheet on the back with the same information as the corresponding design sheet

ii. If you submit your design(s) on a CD by snail mail:

Please include the following for each individual design:

• Each design on a separate JPEG file of between 300 to 600 dpi. Each of those files should be named the following way: the name of your choice preceded by consecutive numbers. Here are a few examples: “1playboyspaceshipcaptain”, “2angrysubterraneanelf”, “3greentunichero”. If you give us a color version, simply add a second file with the word “color” added at the end of the title . Here is an example: “3greentunicherocolor”

• A text file for each design named the same way as their corresponding image file, either in .txt or .rtf format with the following information:

-your name

-your address

-your email

-your phone number

-what was the inspiration for your design

-other classification if relevant

– a description of each design. Designs usually have descriptions which should include any appropriate information to help a maker construct the design.

• Also write your name on the CD in permanent ink.

iii. If you submit your design by email

Please include the following for each individual design:

• Each design needs to be sent in a separate email.

• Each email should include a jpeg file of between 300 to 600 dpi for the design. Each of those files should be named the following way: the name of your choice preceded by consecutive numbers. Here are a few examples: “1playboyspaceshipcaptain”, “2angrysubterraneanelf”, “3greentunichero”. 6. Enter as many designs as you wish

You do not need to submit all your designs at the same time, but all designs must be received prior to the deadline of September 1st, 2019. Designs MUST be received by the Folio director by that date.

7. Your designs will not be returned.

8. Use of Designs

By submitting your designs to Costume-Con 38 you agree to the non-profit use and publication of said designs by Costume-Con 38 prior to and during the run of the conference, to their reproduction in the Future Fashion Folio, presentation at the Future Fashion Show, and that your designs may appear in current and future Costume-Con promotional materials.

Judging and Distribution of the Future Fashion Folio

All submitted designs will be reviewed by a judging panel who will decide what will be included in the Future Fashion Folio. The Folio will be distributed as a PDF file (attached or downloadable link) which will be emailed to registered convention members and all participating designers upon completion.

Second Stage: the Future Fashion Show

The Future Fashion Show is the opportunity for those inspired by the designs they see in the Folio to bring one of the designs to reality and present their creation on stage. While participation in the Future Fashion Folio was open to all, you must be a member of Costume-Con 38 to present an entry on stage in the Fashion Show.

Entries must be modeled by a human (not a doll). You may use a model to wear the created garment. You do not have to design a garment to participate in the Future Fashion Show, merely select a design from the Future Fashion Folio and make it.

Once the Future Fashion Folio is distributed, there will be a period of time reserved for consultation, followed by a set amount of time to reserve a design. Exact dates will be announced when the Folio is distributed. You will need to contact the Future Fashion Show director and claim a design at the following email: [Removed]

There is a limit of three entries based on any single design from the Folio. First come, first served.

Designers wishing to reserve exclusive rights to their own designs should indicate so when they submit it. Designs which have been reserved by their designer will be indicated as such when the folio is published. Designers who intend to make one of their designs for the Showcase, but do not wish to exclude the design from consideration for others, need not make any special requests and should follow the normal reservation process.

Unlike the Historical Masquerade or the Science-Fiction and Fantasy Masquerade, the Fashion Show will not have any entrance categories. Costumes will presented continuously, as in an everyday fashion show (i.e. no sketches).

Additional information regarding the Fashion Show will be released at a later date.
