In addition, Dawn McKechnie, winner of the “Dr. Terwilliker Memorial Award” for her Future Fashion Folio design for “Little Miss Malicious” was presented with a copy of The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T; the prize was presented by Convention Chair Kevin Roche, sponsor of the award.

Ms. McKechnie was also presented with a copy of “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins” by PDiD Directors Bruce MacDermott and Dana MacDermott* for her overwhelming support for the Seussian subtheme in the Folio.

Parallel Dimensions in Design Show: Fashion and Art to Wear at Costume-Con

On Sunday morning at Costume-Con 26, join our local paparazzi to be be bemused and amazed by a parade of fun and fashion at Parallel Dimensions in Design, our runway fashion show. It’s up to you whether you enjoy the show from a seat in the audience or from the runway itself!

Parallel Dimensions in Design will feature garments resulting from three different competitions:

Future Fashion designs created by members from plates in the CC26 Future Fashion Folio
Garments made based on one of the 3 patterns chosen for the CC26 Single Pattern Competition
Art to Wear creations submitted and accepted by our jury for the runway exhibition

If you wish to participate, you can reserve a design from the Folio using our online system, or you can email ffshow@cc26.org to inquire about the Single Pattern Contest or Art to Wear exhibition.

Your imagination is the only limit in the Costume-Con 26 Single Pattern Contest

There are three patterns for this year’s single pattern competition. You may select any of them and tweak and interpret, embellish and modify as you see fit. Two of the patterns were selected in time for optional inclusion in the Folio. You can still select either of these patterns to work with.

They are:

• The Kontusz (Polish Coat) Pattern from Reconstructing History Patterns
• The Wellington Hat from Lynn McMasters
• The third pattern is Simplicity pattern 9800 (http://www.simplicity.com) Yes, it really is a clown costume, suitable for any age costumer of any gender or persuasion.

Registration for the Single Pattern competition can be done in advance or at the convention up to Saturday mid day. The absolute deadline will be announced after scheduling is complete. Needless to say, we prefer if you register in advance. There will be an online registration form for this, but in the meantime you may simple email us at ffshow@cc26.org informing us of your intention to enter.

Updates on competition and staging details will be communicated to those registered for the event and posted on the website

Art to Wear at CC26

Costume-Con does not always have an Art to Wear event, but in keeping with our mini-theme, it seemed as though Parallel Dimensions in Design really ought to include it.

What is Art to Wear? It’s a…
“Fine-Something-That-All-People-Need! It’s a shirt. It’s a sock. It’s a glove. It’s a hat. But it has other uses. Yes, far beyond that.” –Dr Seuss, The Lorax

Do you have an article of clothing you have created that is not quite a costume, doesn’t fit into any of the other events, but uses creative techniques to result in something unique and artistic? Or do you want to build something of this nature in time for CC-26?

If so, the Art to Wear competition may be the ideal place for you. Your entry can be a single piece of clothing, or an outfit. It can be completely of your construction, or something you have embellished into an entirely new identity.

For this event, we will need you to register in advance with a photograph of your item and a description of what it is, and how you did it. Although you can send us up to a half page of description, we will need one paragraph of up to 50 words for the MC to read. We reserve the right to jury the entries for this competition.

Parallel Dimensions in Design will offer (optional) workmanship judging for all categories of entries: Folio; Single Pattern and Art to Wear.

Awards will be given to recognize excellence; ICG Guideline-style competition levels may be considered as an indication of experience.

At the discretion of the Show Directors and Judges, special awards may be given for any work that evokes Dr. Seuss.
Entries from the Folio will be eligible for awards for the realization of the original designs.

All judging will take place backstage or before the show.

How to reserve Folio designs for the Future Fashion Show

Parallel Dimensions in Design, aka The Future Fashion Show, will be held on Sunday, April 27th, 2008, as part of Costume-Con 26. To participate, you must be an attending member of CC26.

Here is how to get into the show.

Submit a design reservation request via regular mail, e-mail or log in and use the reservation form on this site no sooner than December 5, 2007 (15 days after the Folio was mailed to registered attendees)
Requests will be honored in order of postmark date OR e-mail date stamp, not the order received.

We highly recommend using the online reservation form as it places your request directly into our database without any risk of transcription errors. It also automatically generates a postmark.

2. Designers always have first claim to their designs. Designs that have already been reserved exclusively for their designer are so indicated in the Folio.
3. You may select three or more designs and indicate your order of preference. If you wish to create more than one design, be sure to indicate that as well. You may build more than one design for the Fashion Show, but you may only appear on stage once.
4. It may be possible, at the discretion of the Designer and the Directors, for more than one member to create a design. Otherwise, choices will be assigned based upon availability. If all of your choices are unavailable, you will be notified promptly.
5. When making a reservation for a design, please include your name, mailing address, phone number, e-mail address (if available), your CC26 membership number from your mailing label, and your preferred way to receive your reservation confirmation (e-mail or postal).
6. We will confirm your design reservations via your stated preference. This will allow you the maximum time for procurement of materials and production of your creation.

Future Fashion Folio Rules and Submission Guidelines

Disclaimer: Many of our rules are typical & the same as have been used every year for Costume-Con. Please be sure to read the rules thoroughly though, as there are a few changes, and some of the rules may be new to you even if you’ve participated in past Folios.

We have reverted the Single Pattern Competition to an at-con contest. You may still submit designs based on those patterns to the Folio if you wish to do so, but publication in the Folio is not required to submit a garment for consideration in the SPC.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES:

• If you wish to enter the “Project Folio” challenge you must do so by August 15, 2007.
• Other designs must be postmarked by September 15, 2007. Designs received after the deadline will be forwarded to the Costume-Con 27 Future Fashion Folio competition unless you specifically request this not be done.

Future Fashion Folio Guidelines:

1. All designs must be ORIGINAL IDEAS. You can draw your designs on a traced figure or have someone else draw it for you, but the design must be original. Please give credit to anyone who helps you. Need croquis (figures to draw on)? Try these sites: www.alleycatscratch.com/ffashion/Figures.htm

2. Designs may be submitted three ways:
   1. Hard copy (aka: the old-fashioned way, on paper); all designs must be on white 8.5″ x 11″ (or A4) paper, photocopied, high resolution computer prints, black & white line art.*
   2. On CD; you may scan your designs at home & put the files on a disk.
      *You may use any image format you desire, scanned at no less than 300 dpi & no more than 600 dpi. Use the same definition of line art as for hard copies.*
   3. By e-mail; you may send your designs as attachments to an e-mail. One design (with text file) per e-mail, JPEGs only between 300 & 600 dpi. Again use our standard definition of line art.*

   *Definition: Line art – black ink on white background; not pencil, no shading, no colors. Include sufficient room around the image so the design doesn’t run into the margins. See item #5 below for labeling & text file requirements & item #6 for naming conventions.

3. DO NOT SEND US ORIGINAL ARTWORK. All designs should be photocopies or some graphic format.
4. You may, and we encourage you to, submit designs in color. But we require a black & white line art copy of your design for reproduction in the Fashion Folio. Please make sure your drawings are neat and will reproduce well. This includes electronic format drawings. (See Definition: Line art 2.iv above) If you do send us color versions DO NOT use anything that requires spray fixative or that may smear, smudge, stick or flake off on other people’s drawings.
5. Labeling & text file requirements
   1. Your name and address MUST be marked clearly on the back of EACH AND EVERY design sheet submitted; include the design’s name if it has one. Designs usually have descriptions which should include any appropriate information to help a maker construct the design; please put each description on a separate sheet, also labeled on the back.
   2. If you submit your design on a CD please include the descriptions in .txt or .rtf format with your name and address as well as the name and description of your design; again one file per description not all in one. Also write your name on the CD in permanent ink
   3. *If you submit your design by e-mail please include the description in .txt or .rtf format with your name and address as well as the name and description of your design. Remember – one design with description per e-mail.*
   4. In all cases, your e-mail address & phone number are helpful.
6. Naming Conventions for the Designs: Number entries consecutively on the back in the upper right hand corner. Example: if you submit 4 designs, they should be numbered as follows: “#1 of 4”, “#2 of 4” etc. Color versions should be numbered “Color #1 of 4”, etc.
   If you are submitting on CD each drawing file should be named “1 of 4 name of design.jpg”, “2 of 4 name of design.jpg” and so forth. The text files for each design should be named “1 of 4 name of design text.(txt or rtf)”.
   Use the same method on e-mails – but Remember – one design with description per e-mail.
7. Enter as many designs as you wish and as often as you wish PRIOR TO THE DEADLINE OF September 15, 2007.
8. Identify the source of your inspiration (if any) on the back or in the text portion of your design.
9. 1. The Dr. Terwilliker “Dress Me Up” Award – sponsored by The League of Evil Geniuses. What are the Evil of the Future going to wear? You’ve been to the bid parties, you’ve seen the Hall of Fame. Evil Geniuses are a stylish lot. This is your chance to show ’em what you’ve got.
   2. Project Folio – Sign up in advance for this special category. Applications must be received by August 15, 2007 for this category.
   3. 5 Design Briefs will be distributed on the same day to the designers who have accepted this challenge. They will have 7 days to get designs drawn, in an envelope, and postmarked/sent to us. The 3 design winners will be responsible for getting 5 models and for making up their winning ‘collection’ for presentation on the fashion show stage.
   4. The Theodor Seuss Geisel “Cat in the Hat” Award – What is the fashionable non-human of the future wearing? Be it for an alien ambassador attending a diplomatic function, or a household pet in a difficult climate, not everyone who needs or wants clothes is human. What are they going to be wearing?
   5. And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street – The world that Dr. Seuss’ characters inhabited and imagined had a very distinct aesthetic. What would little Marco have envisioned in the future?
   6. Single Pattern Contest – Kontusz Coat – From the pattern company Reconstructing History, the Kontusz Coat is a traditional 17th century Polish man’s coat, with variations of collar and cuff. The pattern fits chests 34″-54″ and all sizes are included in the pattern. The patterns from Reconstructing History include extensive notes on traditional construction methods.    7. Single Pattern Contest – Wellington Top Hat/Mad Hatter Hat – From Lynn McMasters, one of our Bay Area pattern designers, comes the Wellington Top Hat. The pattern includes directions for four crown variations and two brim variations as well as instructions for constructing the hat from straw. Multiple sizes are included in the pattern. Lynn’s patterns are also available from numerous sources, or you can purchase directly at http://lynnmcmasters.com/Special Categories: We have six special design categories in the Folio with special prizes. Please indicate that you wish to be considered for a Special Category on the back of your design. All entries for these categories are eligible for the Folio in general. Single Pattern Contest entries are a subset of the Future Fashion Folio.
10. Your designs will not be returned unless you request it AND have also included a Stamped Self-Addressed Envelope of SUFFICIENT SIZE and with SUFFICIENT POSTAGE on it with your designs.
11. By submitting your designs to Costume-Con 26 you agree to the non-profit use & publication of said designs by Costume-Con 26 prior to & during the run of the conference and to their reproduction for the Fashion Show. All rights revert back to the designer after the conference.
12. Designers: If you wish to make up one of your designs you may indicate that to us in your descriptive text. If that design is a winner you will be automatically listed as making it for the show. After the folio is published, designers will have first option on their designs. As in all CC26 stage events, you can make any number of designs, but you may appear on stage only once. For a select few designs, we may ask the designers to allow more than one version to be made up to appear on stage.
13. You do not have to be a member of Costume-Con 26 to submit designs, but you do have to be an attending member to make up a design and enter it in the Fashion Show. Designers of designs selected for publication will receive a copy of the Folio even if they are not members of the Convention.
