Rules: HELP!!! HELP!!! LET ME OUT OF HERE!!!! YOU CAN’T DO THIS TO ME!!! BRUCE, UNLOCK THIS DOOR IMMEDIATELY!!! YOU TRICKED ME INTO DOING THIS!!!! HUH? WHAT?! I’M ON?!

Greetings Everyone.

My name is Toni Lay and I’ve graciously volunteered to be the Historical Masquerade Director. I feel it is my job to make the Historical Masquerade proceed as smoothly and pleasantly as possible for contestants and staff.

The Historical Masquerade will be held on Sunday, April 5, 1998.

CATEGORIES:

There will be two categories of historical costumes:

RECREATION entries are attempting to reproduce an accurate garment. Documentation should include a picture of the actual outfit.

INTERPRETATION entries utilize the cut, drape and/or style of a particular period, but employs fabrics, colors and/or accessories that are not of that period.

After consulting with several knowledgeable historical costumers, I’ve come up with some preliminary rules for the masquerade. Remember, these are only *preliminary* at this point and may change. I hope to have a more firmly set list of rules for PR#3.

A. DOCUMENTATION:

There will be a limit on the number of pages containing *text*. Entrants are limited to THREE 8 x 10 pages of text, one-side, for each outfit. However, you can have all the captioned pictures, photos, illustrations and footnotes you want.

Documentation *must* be handed in no later than Friday at 7:00pm. Those who may be arriving later, please contact me no later than two weeks in advance of the convention.

B. SKILL DIVISIONS:

There will be three adult levels of entries:

* NOVICE – someone who has never entered a historical masquerade; or has never won a major award in a historical masquerade.

* JOURNEYMAN – has already won once as a Novice in a historical masquerade; or has chosen to enter at this level.

* MASTER – has already won twice as a Journeyman in a historical masquerade; or has chosen to enter at this level; or is a professional earning at least 50% of income from the fashion industry.

There will also be a JUNIOR level for entrants toddler (able to walk alone) to 12 years old, who are appearing on stage by themselves in a self-made (hey, it can happen) or adult-made costume.

C. PRE-JUDGING:

The judges will be coming to the contestants’ rooms to pre-judge their outfits. Contestants will be assigned a day and time for pre-judging and will be given advance warning that the judges are on their way. Be aware that if you choose to wear your garment, you will be poked and prodded by the judges. They *will* peer down your cleavage and look up your address.

D. REGISTRATION:

Pre-registration is MANDATORY. At this point, I am seriously considering a “no at-the-con registration” rule. Therefore, if you only *think* you’ll have a costume done for the Historical Masquerade, pre-register anyway. You can always withdraw if you cannot complete your costume in time.

If you need to contract me, call me at (Number Removed); or e-mail me at (Address Removed). I look forward to seeing you all in a year.

OKAY, BRUCE, I’VE SAID MY PIECE, NOW LET ME OUT! BRUCE? BRUCE?! HELP!!!! HELP!!!!! I’M BEING HELD CAPTIVE!!!! CALL THE POLICE!!!!
