Competition Staff & Rules

Staff:

  • Fashion Folio: Kelly Turner*
  • Fashion Show Coordinator: Karen Emery
  • Master of Ceremonies: Katherine Kurtz

1. Name & address MUST be on the back of EACH design sheet: NOT just on the envelope or on only 1 of the sketches. Violation of this rule will eliminate your entry/s.

2. Submitted designs must be ORIGINAL IDEAS. Figures may be traced or drawn by someone else, but the idea must be the entrants own.

3. All designs must be on 8.5 x 11″ paper – NO LARGER. White paper preferred. Use extra sheets for detail work if necessary.

4. Any medium is acceptable as long as it is copiable or send another copiable sketch along with the original. Felt nib pen, watercolors, & colored pencils are all good to use.

5. Designs may be colored in or colors indicated as long as you include one black & white as well.

6. Submitted designs may be Xeroxes or other clear methods of repro (in fact we suggest it): original art need not be sent.

7. Number entries consecutively: on each sheet indicate how many in all (#1 of 5, #2 of 5, etc) so we know how many entries there are from any one designer. If you submit a second set, label each page “second set:l of 5, 2 of 5,etc”. If you color your designs, label your B&W set “COPIES”.

8. Enter as many designs as you wish, as often as you wish, PRIOR TO THE DEADLINE.

9. Identify source of inspiration – book, movie, etc – if any. Give artist credit, if other than designer, on back of design.

10. Indicate on the back of each entry whether it’s to be returned or not. Repoductions will NOT be returned unless indicated. If you want your material returned, please include sufficient postage. However, we’d like to keep designs for our files, if possible.

11. Neatness counts! Spray smudgy work with a fixative before mailing! Make design lines clean and clear!

12. THE CONTEST IS OPEN TO ANY INTERESTED PERSON, ANY AGE, ANY SEX – membership in the convention is not a requirement – interest in Science Fiction or Fantasy is helpful but not required.

13. Non-profit use & publication of all designs submitted is the right of the Fantasy Costumers Guild – you agree to this by the action of submitting designs to this contest. Rights to further use will revert to the designer after the conference.

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES TO BE IN OUR HANDS: JULY 31, 1982

Even if you’ve never tried designing before, don’t be intimidated. This can be FUN once you get into it! We want lots of entries, so submit designs early and often.

Some suggested categories:

  • UNIFORMS (both military and civilian)
  • STREET CLOTHES for various planets and cultures
  • FORMAL WEAR (for a night out on the town, a wedding, a funeral, etc.)
  • LOUNGEWEAR
  • STAGEWEAR (for singers, dancers, actors, other entertainers)
  • CLOTHES FOR AFFAIRS OF STATE (worn by ambassadors, governors, evil galactic overlords, and whatnot)
  • CHILDREN’S AND TEENS WEAR ACCESSORIES (jewelry, hairstyles, headdresses, things to carry)
  • ETHNIC WEAR
  • WORK CLOTHES
  • NON-HUMANOID ALIEN WEAR
  • HUMANOID ALIEN WEAR

If your design is none of these, make up a category (or we will, so don’t fret.)

Design ideas should be original, though they may fit into a known universe. While the emphasis is on futuristic fashion, styles with medieval lines may work in cultural / formal / stage contexts.

You don’t have to be an artist to enter; get someone else to draw your designs, or trace figures from art books, magazines, whatever to draw your designs on.

Your designs are yours; you will be credited in the Fashion Folio and at the Fashion Show should your designs win, and all rights to further use revert to you after Costume-Con.

Put your age on your entries, especially if you are under 21! Entries from younger designers may be judged separately.

The judging panel will consist of people from Southern California with some kind of costuming / designing background.

If you want to be a model one of your designs (should it win), please indicate it on the back of the drawing so we don’t give it away to someone else first! You will also have to submit the same information / photo(s) as the other models.

This show will take place Sunday afternoon. It will be a presentation of the winners of the Fashion Design Contest. Sorry; only winning designs can be made up.

If you wish to be a model, send us a list of your measurements / clothing sizes / coloring along with a full length, recent photo. Even if you don’t have a perfect body, some of the designs will work for you.

Once judging is completed, the Fashion Folio will be sent to you. This should be 3-4 months prior to the conference so there will be enough time to choose costumes and make them. Make a first, second, and third choice and mail them to the fashion show co-ordinator. Please, do not start making any costume until you have been given the go-ahead!! The co-ordinator will have the final say on your selection of costume fabric and color. But she will be flexible. Send her swatches for approval. Some variation from original colors of the design may be permissable in order to achieve a color-balanced fashion show.

You must pay for your own costume. If you are a non-sewer, you must find a seamstress in your area to help you. We can offer pattern / fabric suggestions, technical advice, and shopping hints, but other than that, you’re on your own!

The co-ordinator would like a photo of your costume when it is completed (before the con!!), and may offer suggestions for final touch-up work.

Be prepared to meet several hours before the Fashion Show to practice walking on stage, meet other models, hear your music, and get dressed.

NOTE: Even if you won’t be modeling, we need people to help with hair, makeup, and getting models dressed. If this is your forte’, please volunteer!

There will be separate dressing areas for men and women!!

The fashion show will take place during the banquet. If you are modeling but also want to eat, let us know. If enough models fall into this category, we’ll try to arrange the banquet so this is possible.
