Miscellaneous Notes:

CC16 “NON-COSTUMING AWARDS” We have to preface this a little bit. Nora and I (Bruce) stumbled across an estate sale with a basement full of old bowling, child pageant and baseball trophies. We looked at each other and immediately thought the same thing — “Let’s give them away at Costume Con!” So, for $20, we took home some 87 of them, 60+ of which were salvagable. The SLUTS had a “bliveting” party, where we “spiffed” the trophies up, hot gluing all sorts of stuff onto them, and REALLY making them obnoxious — stuff like little top hats, beads, purple aircraft rivets (official “blivet” of the Guild chapter), chains, and so on. We were handing these horrendous things out all weekend to anyone and everyone for any nonsensical reason we could think of. For the amusement of the audience, these awards were announced at the various shows when appropriate. We made the titles up on the spot.

Below is a mostly complete list of ones we took the time to record for posterity:

  • “Coolest Web-master: John O’Halloran (for being helping us get set up on this website)
  • “Our Lady of Perpetual Patience”: Patrick Johnson, for his devotion to duty setting up T-forms in the Exhibit Room before the con started. And putting up with certain individuals supervising his mounting their costumes in place.
  • “I Never Got Mine for CC11!”: To Penny Lipman, who never received her award for Best In Show.
  • “I’d Pay Money For This!”: To Richard Hyll‡, who wanted one to give to a friend.
  • “Most Scary Real-Life Portrayal – Couples Division”: To Stephan and Marian Clark, as lounge lizard lush and Aging Cheerleader Who Could Still Fit Into Her Uniform. Wait’ll you see the photo we have of ’em.The next few we’ll refer to as the Shelby Morris
  • “I Like Your Looks” awards. There were no titles for these, but essentially, Jeff and Mary Morris’ daughter helped hand these out as she saw fit. The recipients were: Shelby Morris (Hey, there’s gotta be some perks to this job, I guess), Anna Quanbeck, Larry Leip, Liz Gerds, Karen Borquist, Susan McMahon, Mary Gwart (SP), and Nancy Mildebrandt
  • “Best Hotel Stooge”: Dominic May, one of the hotel catering staffers, who was very accommodating to us.
  • “Best Live Costuming Accessory”- (Dog): Tammarron Seene
  • “An Award Isn’t Necessary” (also known as the “Why Do I Have To Accept It?” Award) – Ruth Kaufman
  • “Longest Distance Traveled to Costume-Con”: To Richard Hyll‡ and Julia Ann Hyll, from the Virgin Islands
  • “Oh My God!! They’re Coming This Way!”: Eric Johnson, for his drag costume, which you can pretty much guess why. Hopefully, we can find a photo.
  • “It’s My Birthday!”: A trophy with a Zodiac sign medallion glued to it as handed out to appropriate parties, randomly.
  • “To Cute To Kill”: Lance Ikegawa and Heather Riesen, for their “cute couple” antics in their husky dog hall costumes.

There may’ve been more, but that’s all we have written down. Also, it should be noted that on the back of our CC16 Program Book, we had the “IShouldawunna” Award, where anyone who felt they were “stiffed” for an award somehow could cut it out and fill in the appropriate title. Suitable for framing.
