CostumeCon 14 is proud to present our programming listing. You’ll find a condensed schedule in your Pocket Program. See below for a more detailed description of the program items.

Our programming come in several “flavors,” with (we hope) something to please every taste!

Panels: A group of speakers will address a subject.

Lectures: A speaker or team of speakers will provide information on a topic.

Discussion Groups: A round robin forum to address topics for general discussion.

Demos: A costume related skill will be demonstrated to an audience.

Workshops: Hands-on experience!

*Limited Workshops: Hands-on classes of limited availability. You must also pay a supply fee for some of these workshops; check the sign-up list in the Office to see if any spaces remain for the workshop you’re interested in.

Friday Program Schedule:

  • Science Fiction Headdresses (Panelists will discuss creating SF headdresses. Deborah will display some of the fantastic headdresses she has created.): Deborah K Jones & Animal X
  • Organic Piecework (Yes, it’s piecework but it’s not straight lines. This panel covers creating visual and textural interest with pieced fabric, manipulating pieces so the final fabric lies flat, and how to handle fabrics of different weights within a design.): KinShan Taylor
  • LIMITED WORKSHOP* Beaded Hat Pin Workshop (Create a Beautiful Beaded Hat pin in the style of the 1920’s. Mary Laney, a talented bead artist from the Seattle area, will offer this workshop. There is room for 15 students. Mary also invites anyone who would like to attend the class as an observer (no kit or reservations) to do so up to the capacity of the room.   • Ribbonwork & Fabric Manipulation Slide Lecture (Candace will entertain and educate you with this unique program on design. She will have some of her art to wear sculptures for show and tell.): Candace Kling (2 hours)
  • Soft Sculpture (Workshop to help you learn how to handle foam, fabrics, and fluff to build extra form and texture to your costumes.): Joy Day & Garth Stubbs (2 hours)
  • Basic Hand Sewing (Betsy will teach some of the very basic hand sewing techniques that are essential for getting some special effects. There are some things for which the machine is just not right!): Betsy Marks (2 hours)
  • Children’s Theater Costumes (Dana shares her knowledge of creation and staging of children’s theater costumes. Useful information for children and adults!): Dana MacDermott*
  • Creative Corsetry (Sheri will show some of her creations and discuss how to use techniques from historical corsets to make functional and fantastic corsets for daily wear and costumes.): Sheri Jurnecka
  • Twisted Historicals and “How to Win a Spazzie” (Come enjoy this lighter side of costuming. Learn about the coveted Spazzie award given annually by the Sick Pups of the NY/NJ Costumer’s Guild.): Toni Lay*
  • Cyber Punk Construction (Creating the future with today’s junk: multi-media mayhem.): Eric Maia (1.5 hours)
  • LIMITED WORKSHOP* Princess Lace (Class project will be ‘engageantes’ (lace sleeve ruffles), suitable for 18th century as well as 1880’s and Edwardian gowns. The fee includes all materials to create a pair of engageantes. Please bring sewing kit.): Bobbie Athay Chase (2 hours)
  • Applique with Non-Fray Fabrics (Felt, ultrasuede and other non-fray fabrics can be easily incorporated in applique projects. Come learn how!): Heather Davenport
  • Masquerade Presentation (Learn the basics of masquerade presentation. Tips on how to design an effective presentation including choosing a costume, stage movement, selecting music & technical considerations. Whether you plan to compete or just enjoy watching masquerades, we’ll show you the combination of elements that go into an effective and award winning entry.): Ellie Farrell, Jana Keeler (2 hours)
  • Millinery Theory & Design (Come listen to our local Milliner Extraordinaire as he shares the magic of his craft.): Frederic Burleigh
  • Omni Garment (Tara Maginnis will describe this theatrical garment which can be worn 30 ways. It is used for creating “instant” costumes for theater.): Tara Maginnis
  • LIMITED WORKSHOP* Antique Ribbon Work and Trim (Learn to make glamorous vintage details. Use them with contemporary style and flair, or in keeping with tradition. This hands on workshop is designed to give students experience in making a variety of 19th century ribbon and fabric trims and finishes: soft pleated, folded, pressed, and gathered.): Candace Kling (3 hours)

  • Ethnic Inspired Fantasy Costuming: Exotic Elements (Ethnic elements can be used to enhance the character of your fantasy costumes. Deb will lead this discussion and show some examples.): Deborah Strub
  • How to Use a Hat Block (Mary La Venture will demonstrate the use of hat blocks for producing fine costuming accessories. Demo will include felt, straw, and buckram.): Mary La Venture (2 hours)
  • LIMITED WORKSHOP* Kumi Himo – Japanese Braiding (Alison Addicks, owner of the ‘Lace-maker,’ will demonstrate and teach the art of Japanese braiding. Students will learn to make a four bobbin round braid of pearl cotton and metallic thread suitable for trimming ethnic or fantasy costumes. Alison will demonstrate 8 bobbin and other patterns as the students work on their projects. Equipment will be provided for use during the class. Alison will have a full range of supplies available for sale after the class at 15% discount for students. Each student will receive a handout, and enough thread to create about one yard of braid.): Alison Addicks (2 hours)
  • Belly Dance Workshop (This belly dancing workshop will feature basic beladi steps, floorwork, and costuming techniques.): Kathy Sanders (2 hours)
  • Wigs and Fantasy Hair (Jana and Christine will share their knowledge and experiences working with wigs and false hair pieces to augment your look. They will discuss proper care of your wigs and how to let your mind run free and create wild hairstyles. You will learn that big hair is not just for Dolly Patton anymore!): Christine James, Jana Keeler (2 hours)
  • Collecting Media Costumes (Where to find them, how to get them.): Garth Stubbs
  • Fiber: Not Just a Good Idea for Your Diet (Carole Hughes will share her expertise with raw fiber (no, not bran). She will bring examples of many different natural fibers. Joan will discuss hand weaving, lots of information on natural dyes (and how not to kill yourself with them.) Carole may let you try your hand at spinning!): Joan Bradt & Carole Hughes
  • Rose Beads (Recycling at its finest! Learn to make fragrant beads from a prepared paste of rose petals. You may keep the beads you make.): Kate McClure (2.5 hours)
  • Organization and Presentation for Large Groups (Come learn about the pitfalls and joys of presenting in large groups. Learn from these two masquerade veterans.): Bridget Landry, Kate Morgenstern
  • Color Lighting Demo (Demonstration using theatrical lighting gels to show how different fabrics, textures and colors behave under professional stage lighting. Great for planning your CostumeCon or Worldcon Masquerade Presentations.): Joy Day
  • What the Heck is a Den Mom? (and other people who help you survive a masquerade) (There is a whole crew behind you that is helpful and supporting, working to get you on stage. Come learn how your Den “Mom” and the rest of the crew can be your best friends, and how you, too, can lend a hand backstage.): Cat Devereaux, Michael Citrak
  • Unusual Materials (Everything can be a resource for producing costumes. Come and see how Animal X uses “Non Traditional” elements in her costumes.): Animal X (1.5 hours)
  • Feather Embellishments Workshop (Hats have long been enhanced by the beauty of feathered embellishments. Join us in an hour of experimentation with feathers. Learn techniques of cutting, curling, and dyeing these unique natural materials.): Windy Lewis & Judith Smith
  • Meet The Artist (Today’s artist: Frederic Burleigh)
  • What Do Judges Look For? (These two costumers have been on both sides of the masquerade stage. Come hear their tips and advice on what the judges look for and how a judge decides which costume wins an award.): Gail Wolfenden-Steib & Jacqueline Ward
  • The Norman Conquest – A Slide Show of the Bayeux Tapestry (This presentation includes 60 slides of the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting the Norman Conquest of 1066.): Tim Bray
  • Victorian Bathing Beauties (A bevy of beauties (and gents) gather to get their toes wet! Period or modern bathing attire welcomed. All pool rules apply; please remember this is a “public” area.)
  • The Great DALMUTI Tournament (Join the volunteer staff from Wizards of the Coast for an evening of cards! This pleasant (cut throat) friendly parlor (warfare) card game is an excellent cos-turners’ game, with just the right touch of mischief.): Wizards of the Coast volunteer Paul Randles will head this team.   • Novice Historicals (Betsy will lead this discussion of how to break into the realm of historical costuming. Where to start, what to do, what the judges look for, etc..): Betsy Marks
  • Supporting Structures (Show and tell discussing different techniques for building harnesses, carriages, and other support structures for adding wings, extra arms, and huge headdresses to your costumes. A must for Fantasy and Science Fiction Costumers!): Gary Anderson*, Joy Day, Richard Stephens, Garth Stubbs (1.5 hours)
  • LIMITED WORKSHOP* Cockades/Cocardes (These French hat decorations, often made of pleated or interlaced grosgrain ribbon, have an ancient history. The namesake of the cockscomb, they have been used as military insignia, award ribbons, shoe bows and hat decorations. You will learn the basic folds, and a plenitude of variations.): Candace Kling (3 hours)
  • LIMITED WORKSHOP* Creating Cosmetics from Historical Recipes (Marilee Humason will share her knowledge and research into the cosmetics of the past and help the students create a variety of lotions and potions from historical recipes (non-toxic of course). Students will have samples to take home. Students: Please wear appropriate clothing for working around a hot plate. Marie Cooley and Judith Smith personally use many of Marilee’s concoctions and will be showing their use in the 18th Century Focus Make-up Demo.): Marilee Humason (2 hours)
  • Historical Sewing Slide Show (Animal will show her slide collection documenting historical sewing techniques. No, they weren’t all tiny, even stitches!): Animal X
  • Children’s Costuming (A panel discussion on costuming for children.): JoAnne Kirley, Dana McDermott*, Richard Stephens
  • The Complete Costumer’s Video Library (An hour to discuss your favorite costume movies, and why. Be sure to fill out the form found in your packet to cast your vote for your favorite costuming video of all time.): Ken Dawe
  • Design Brainstorming Process (These two master costumers have worked together for years and have won many awards together. Deb and Ellie will discuss the steps the brainstorming process they use when first conceiving one of their wonderful presentations.): Ellie Farrell, Deborah K. Jones
  • A Photo Archive (Jeff will explain how to create a photo archive of your costumes and collected pieces.): Jeff Kondo
  • All Dressed Up and No Place to Go? (Discussion of re-enactors you can contact. Terry will have source books which you can use to reference organizations from Roman Legions to World War II. Come and share your own personal contacts with re-enactors so that others will know where to play!): Terry Smith
  • Documentation: What’s it All About? (Discuss where to start researching documentation, how to present it to the judges and beyond.): Karen Moore, Deborah Strub
  • Presenting CCXV (Betsy will make a brief presentation of what has been prepared so far and will then answer questions from the audience. She will also take suggestions on what people would like to see happen at Costume-Con in Baltimore in 1997.): Betsy Marks
  • Dry-Cleaning (George E. Fowler of Fowler Cleaners and Laundry joins us to discuss cleaning and preservation of our costumes. Mr. Fowler has twenty seven years experience in the business of cleaning and is currently the cleaner for the Historic Everett Theater.   • Belly Dance Fashion Show (Come join us for a look at a variety of belly dance fashions from cabaret to ethnic.): Coordinator – Lynn Kingsley (2 hours)
  • Movement for Mascots (How to make those oversized costumes come to life, and how to live in them. Daren will cover communication through movement, “Mascot Language”, and safety in an enclosing costume. Daren Bost (2 hours)
  • 18th Century Focus Event: Frederic Burleigh, Marie Cooley, Christine James, Jana Keeler, Mary Laney, Jack Laney, Susan Pasco, Judith Smith, Erin Stark (3 hours)
  • Fetish Apparel: From Scandalous Secret to Sexy Streetwear (Once a carefully guarded secret, fetish clothing has come out of the closet in recent years. Rhias K. Hall will discuss the origins and functions of fetish wear past, present and future, as well as the current trend toward S&M as mainstream fashion.): Rhias Hall
  • Sage Advice for Making Costumes Comfortable (REMEMBER POCKETS! and other sage advice on making costumes comfortable and practical.): Gail Wolfenden-Steib
  • A Peek at Underwear (Take a journey through the past one hundred years of underwear – its function and its fashion – as we view slides from the Munsingwear archives of the Minnesota Historical Society. A collection of delightful patent photographs from underwear styles of the early twentieth century will be included in the presentation.): Nancy Bryant

  • SF and Fantasy Makeup (Qeldas will demonstrate many different makeup techniques including fantasy elements, scars, mustaches, crepe hair, and the “bumpy headed Klingon.”): Qeldas Pickett (2 hours)
  • Fabric Painting for Costumes on the Stage (Tara will show examples of painted garments and demonstrate her techniques. Learn how to make that $2.00 fabric look like a million bucks!): Tara Maginnis (2 hours)
  • LIMITED WORKSHOP* Card Weaving (Learn the ancient art of card weaving. You will learn the basics of warping and planing a design. Astrid will discus the history and design possibilities for use in costuming. Students will receive a set of cards and pearl cotton to get started.): Astrid Anderson Bear (1.5 hours)
  • How to Live with a Costumer (Discuss the pitfalls and pleasures of living with a costumer, from the viewpoints of a non-costumer living with a costumer, and costumers living with other costumers. Guaranteed to be a lively discussion!): Jeff Kondo, Sandy Pettinger, Terry Smith
  • A Wish For Wings that Work! Special Effect Costumes (Animal X shares with us techniques for creating a variety of wings with life like movement.): Animal X
  • Belly Dance Photo Hour (The belly dancers from today’s fashion a show will stop by the photo room to pose for photos.)
  • Movement in Your Costume (Tim will present slides of period art illustrating proper posture from various historic periods. He will then work with members of the audience and demonstrate how to pose effectively for the costumes they are wearing.): Tim Bray

  • Preparing Panels on “Costuming for the Sewing-Impaired” (Is your local convention having trouble getting enough participation in the Masquerades? What you need is New Blood! Come to this discussion of simple techniques that can be easily demonstrated for the costuming timid at conventions. See them be inspired to go for the gold and join the ranks of the Few, the Proud, the Costumers!): Bridget Landry
  • How to Get the Most Out of Your Costume Photos (Greg will discuss posing and photo composition. This is a great skill useful to costumers and photographers alike!): Greg Bradt, Gail Wolfenden-Steib (victim)
  • Furry Stuff (Learn about construction of anthropomorphic costumes, how to survive in a fur cover suit & other tips of the trade.): Daron Bost, Garth Stubbs
  • Costume for Dance (Join two designers who are passionate about costumes for dance! They will bring examples from their collections of costumes, theater, ballet, ethnic and much more to show and tell. Come and learn their favorite design techniques for maximum movement.): Gypsy Ames & Betty Bigelow (1.5 hours)
  • LIMITED WORKSHOP * Vintage Ruching (Learn how seamstresses ‘ruffled the ruffle’ at the turn of the century. How milliners trimmed their hats with gauged ribbon in the 1920’s and how the Parisian designers apply these skills today. Using ribbon and fabric you will make samples of these and many other techniques.): Candace Kling (3 hours)
  • Costumes that Shock (Animal X and Randal “Max” Gross will discuss controversial and shocking costuming concepts.): Randal “Max” Gross, Animal X
  • Leather: Where to Buy, What to Look For (Tips for getting good buys on leather, what to look for in a hide and what to select for different kinds of projects.): Windy Lewis
  • Texturizing Fabric (Texture is an important design element in costuming. Deborah and Jacqueline will show examples incorporating texture into the design.): Deborah Strub, Jacqueline Ward
  • “I married a Klingon” and other things our spouses tell the rest of the world (“No, I am not in a play!” and other snappy comebacks to stupid questions and looks from non-costumers.   • From 2 Dimensional Image to 3 D Costume (Learn how to analyze sources such as photos, illustrations, paintings and renderings to determine fabrication, common design elements, scale, patterning options, cost to build, yardage, estimates, as well as working the costume’s final use into the selection. The information derived from such an analysis is pertinent to the historical, science fiction/fantasy, and theatrical costumer even the hall costumer benefits!) Karen Moore, Gail Wolfenden-Steib
  • Writing for Costume Journals (These three pros share the joys & woes of getting costuming articles published.) Julie Cheetham, Alison Kondo, Tara Maginnis
  • ICG Meeting (Annual Meeting of the International Costumer’s Guild. Voting for officers, deciding on location of future conventions, discussion of proposals and issues. All the things you learned about in high school parliamentary procedure class will be demonstrated.)
  • Meet the Judges of the Historical Masquerade (Documentation will also be on display.): Marie Cooley, Kathryn Elms, Peggy Kennedy*
  • 18th c. Working Man’s Clothing (Ken will share the dissertation of Bryan Howard, entitled “Had On and Took With Him: Runaway Indentured Servant Clothing in Virginia, 1774-1778”. This is a Ph.D. dissertation in material culture. It looks at 201 runaway indentured servants descriptions from the Virginia Gazette published between 1774 and 1778. The working person is a part of historical costuming that is always difficult to document.): Ken Dawe

  • Documentation of the Historical Masquerade (Documentation will be on display.)
  • Cartridge Pleating Workshop (Come and explore the wonders of compressing yards of fabric into inches. Robin will teach the basics of this classic fabric treatment.): Robin Pavlovsky* (2 hours)
  • LIMITED WORKSHOP* Silk Ribbon Embroidery (Learn the basics of this wonderful technique to add detail and texture to your projects.) Judith Smith (2 hours)
