Panel Programming
Panels, demonstrations, and workshops will be held Friday through Monday morning, starting in the morning and running until around dinner-time. Panelists may submit ideas for any kind of discussion, lecture, demo, or hands-on workshop that relates to costuming. Past Costume-Cons have had panels about beading, corset-making, dyeing, special materials, electronics, prop-building, and the history and culture of costuming, for example.

If you have submitted a panel or panels with the intention to run them yourself, you will be receiving a confirmation email shortly if your panel has been approved. The completed schedule will be available closer to the convention, as well as released on our special Sched.org app!
Panel programming will run on a schedule of standard one-hour panel slots with some overlap for setup and teardown, but there will be several 90 minute and 2 hour panels and workshops as well! Please note, workshops are generally hands-on classes where people will learn a special technique, material, or tool. They are usually limited in the number of participants but are open to additional watchers, who can see and take notes but not participate directly. Workshops may have a small additional fee for participants to cover the costs of materials, so please be aware of this when preparing for the con.
Panels will not be scheduled to run during the three main competitions (Sci-Fi/Fantasy Masquerade, Historical Masquerade, Future Fashion Show), during the Friday Night Social, or during the ICG Annual Meeting on Friday morning. Panels will generally run from noon on Friday through noon on Monday. The complete schedule will be available closer to the convention!

Do you need to cut, edit, or extend a song for your presentation? Mix in narration and sound effects? This panel will introduce you to the techniques usable on sound-editing programs from freeware and shareware like Audacity and Gold Wave to the professional-level tools. We’ll cover song editing, extensions, cross-fading, voiceover recording and mixing, the all-important issue of level control, and modification of sounds; and time permitting, even synthesis of sounds.

Running a masquerade or a costume contest is not the easiest thing ever. This is a panel for all people interested in running a masquerade in a convention or an event who need all the basics, from the staff, the technical needs, rules, etc.

Learn to create fantastic larger than life character costumes. Materials used are mostly recycled and re-purposed items that are easy to source. Laurie Rossbach, Madison Children’s Museum arts director and puppeteer, will give an overview of giant puppetry and show many varied examples to spark your imagination to create your own.

Eric will present information on the current status of the Library Of Congress’ Costuming Archives. What is currently being worked on, what has been added, what is missing, etc. In addition, he will inform on how to summit videos.

Learn to make a small beaded pouch from a kit. Kits include all supplies and materials needed. The two techniques taught are edge beading, and making fringe. Experience not necessary; if you can thread a beading needle you are way ahead already! Both techniques will easily lend themselves to larger projects in the future too! $10 Materials Fee

Learn the basics of making things light up, move, smoke, or other fun effects without learning circuitry or soldering. Where can you find the fun things that make costumes look neat?

Knitting is a fun way to create unique textiles, garments, and more! If you’ve ever wondered how to get started with knitting, or would like to learn some of the basic terms and techniques, come on down to this panel. Experienced knitters are welcome to attend and share some wisdom as well.

Our panel of veteran costumers talk about everything from pockets, to footwear, to how to wear your badge in character. They’ll address costume and prop transport and storage, ways to increase your own personal comfort in costume, safety tips for costuming in crowds, and more.

This method of applying beads and sequins is far faster than beading with a needle and thread. Theresa LaQuey will show tambour equipment, how to prepare fabric for tambour beading, set up a loom and then demonstrate how to apply the beads. Also included will be a PowerPoint of several different beaded garments made by LaQuey and some of her favorite beaded gowns from the 1920s-1940s.

The Friday Night Social is Costume-Con’s traditional party to get to know your fellow con-goers and kick off the conference in style. There will be food, fun, and the showcase of the Single Pattern Contest entrants. Have some nibbles, mingle with other costumers of all types, and dance the night away! CC34’s Social Theme will be Dance Among the Sidhe. As twilight descends upon the natural world, wondrous creatures hidden from human view come out and play. Join us as magical creatures (great and small!) feast, cavort, and dance in a fairy ring! This evening event will include great food, cocktails, and entertainment. Along with the Single Pattern Contest, guests will be able to enjoy dancing and a variety of other fun activities.

The Historic Recreation Society in Minneapolis/St. Paul presents a workshop on how to get a great fit from a pattern for a Victorian bodice. They plan to have live models of different sizes stand up before the class while someone fits the mock-ups directly to them, talking about the pitfalls of using a commercial pattern, and listing tips and tricks to getting an excellent fit with them.

For example, battery-operated Christmas tree lights, electroluminescent wire kits, etc. We’ll keep notes on all the resources mentioned and post them on the web after the con. A skill often used in theatrical costume design, learn how to put your costume ideas to paper. This panel explores synthesizing research and concept to render a dynamic representation of your design. The panel will be a short hands on exercise in figure drawing, fabric rendering (colored pencil), and design layout.

This lecture is an introduction to the body painting options available to incorporate with your costumes or cosplay. Sheryl will discuss various paint types and the pros and cons of each type, while giving out tips and tricks that will help make the process easier.

Each main ‘race’ featured in the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit’ movies have a distinctive style, and they are all have European basis in history. For example, the Nordic/Viking tunics of the dwarves, or the Romanesque to 12-13th Century bliant styles of the elves; the Saxon/Norman garb of the Rohirrim, to the middle 1800’s English country garments worn by the hobbits. Discussion will center on the basic outlines/silhouettes of each group, best materials to use, and commercial patterns that can be adapted for each look.

Learn the basics of drafting your own corset pattern, discuss how to alter existing corset patterns, and get tips on patterning corsets for different body types. While this is a lecture based panel, there will be actual custom drafted corset patterns on hand, as well as the resulting corsets made from the patterns, so you can see how patterning affects the shaping of a corset.

Costumers intrigued by what goes into organizing and running a masquerade may be interested in the ICG’s new Special Interest Group on ‘Masquerade Running’. This program item will tell you what we’re about and what we hope to do to help costumers do a better job organizing and running masquerades and similar stage presentations. That’s why our nickname is HeLPS (for ‘Hey, kids, Let’s Put on a Show’).

An overview of HD make up, moulage for casualty simulations and training, and FX techniques. JoAnn has been doing makeup for short and full length films and web series for 5 years and will show the materials she likes to use, and tricks learned on the set. Learn to make bloods and how to remove the evidence of them, basic sculpting, and zombie moulage.

First a discussion of Memory Cloths and memories. Then participants will embroider their thoughts or memories on small fabrics. Can be a preservation or healing of old memories or the embedding of words to create a new memory. Materials provided.

Speakers: Greg Aldrete
An illustrated lecture on researching and recreating Alexander the Great’s linen armor. Professor Greg Aldrete from UW-GB describes the project and how the reconstructions were made, followed by a hands-on demonstration in which audience members can examine samples of the contraction materials as well as look at and even try on one of the reconstructed armors.

Designer Theresa LaQuey presents an overview of fashion from the Art Deco period from the 1920s up to World War II. This period saw many shocking changes and also interesting fashion trends, some of which are still with us today.

The “Victorian” era actually encompasses many distinct styles, but many people are unaware of it. This panel will demonstrate historical outfits designed to be correct for different years within the Victorian period, and discuss the common design elements of each. They will also give pattern recommendations, and display a collection of original photographs.

Costuming, like any art form, can provoke varied responses from an audience. This traces the history of convention costuming (mostly in masquerades), with examples of ground-breaking costumes that were controversial in some way. May include controversial topics and photos of brief nudity, but still PG-13.

A course discussing wig application and removal techniques, prepping hair to wear under wigs, basic care and storage of wigs, troubleshooting common problems.
2:00pm – 3:00pm P An Overview of Underwear: A Brief History
Speakers: Rae Lundquist
A discussion and timeline of European historical undergarments, from the Roman to the 20th Century, including materials used and construction techniques. The talk will include the early centuries, but will focus more on post 1300’s, especially the support foundations garments such as farthingales, panniers, hoops, etc.as well as different styles of corset, and more. May include a $1 charge for handouts.
2:00pm – 4:00pm P Basic Electricity for Costume Wiring

For those who want to go beyond using “found” electronics, this workshop will teach the basics of connecting everything from power source (batteries) to LEDs or lamps, and everything in between. The basics of voltage, current, and resistance will be shown step-by-step. Various circuit, battery, lighting, and wiring options will all be covered. Finally we will show some examples of more complex electronics and show how to apply those principles. To participate in the workshop, you must bring six fresh AA batteries and pre-purchase a $41 parts kit to participate – most of the parts can be used in later projects. $21 if you already have a multimeter; you may also substitute other parts already owned. We’ve all done stupid things. But for now, we’re going to focus on the costume-oriented ones. Come hear tales of tragedy and woe that, in hindsight, are pretty darned funny! Share your stories of sorrow and sadness that at least ended with you learning not to do THAT again! Don’t worry, we understand, because we’ve been there, done that, and managed to finish the project anyway.

Based on The Ashley Book of Knots, the panelist will cover some favorite practical and decorative knots, and you will have a chance to peruse the book and its 3900 different knots to learn how to tie some of your favorites.

Do you know a little bit about corsets, but have been intimidated by all of the hardware? Do you know the basics of making a corset, but want to know more about different construction methods? Then this is the panel for you! You’ll get to hands on learn how to cut and tip a steel bone and set a grommet, watch a busk installation, receive swatches of specialized corsetry materials, and talk through a variety of different ways to construct corsets. Learn how to create your own dress form using plastic bags and duct tape! We will pair up so that everyone can have one of their own. Please bring 2 large rolls of duct tape and your choice of stuffing material. A few rolls of tape will be on hand to purchase at cost, but bring your own if you can. Wear proper-fitting undergarments that reflect what you would usually wear, and comfy clothes.

Categories traditionally include historical reproductions, historically-inspired garments, and ethnic dress. There will be a halftime photo run, Cosplay Video Showcase, and announcements of awards given in the Doll and Tote Contests.

The 18th century is filled with puzzling fashion terms. How can you know what your costume needs if you don’t even know what it’s called? This lecture will walk you through such mysteries as what separates a robe anglaise from a robe francaise from a robe volante. Learn where to wear such oddities as a fichu, engageants, and robings. Pockets, panniers, petticoats – we’ll cover it all.

Speakers: Sylvie Laurin
A fun workshop that even beginners will love! Learn to paint beautifully on fabric using simple techniques, which will be useful for painting on other materials as well. Trixy will demonstrate shapes like strawberries, melons, bears, and flowers with shadow on fabric, and talk about using washable paints, fabric medium, and other supplies. $5 workshop fee for paint, brushes provided. Come in costume at your own risk.

Visit Madison’s famous free Zoo and then visit the Arboretum, a lovely natural haven in the middle of Madison. Attendees of this tour will decide where they want to have lunch.
10:30am – 4:00pm T Touring with the SLUTS: Exploring Dr. Evermore’s Forevertron
Bruce and Nora Mai will be your tour guides as you explore the unique Forevertron, have lunch, and then head over the Baraboo Bluffs to visit the Circus World Museum. 4-5 spaces are available in the Mai’s Bus.

A presentation showing different types of kimono and historical evolution of the garment; Maral may also do a hands-on dressing demo with information on basic kimono dressing, if audience members bring their own kimono/yukata and obi.

Speakers: Theresa LaQuey
Designer Theresa LaQuey presents a talk and slide show discussing different aspects of Hollywood glamour from its golden age and some of the methods she has used to recreate these gowns for clients. She has created many garments, such as gowns by Adrian, Orry-Kelly and Gwen Wakeling and will also share some of the stories from Hollywood’s costuming past.
